Sunday, June 29, 2008 Cool Product: Baked Not Fried! Cooling Rack...

You know when you bake a whole load of cookies and you're trying to cool them along with other stuff you have in your oven and there just isn't enough room?

Check out this product that was featured on Delight.com, their Baked Not Fried! Cooling Rack. It even folds up for easy storage. Talk about maximizing counter space.

Now THAT is something I would definitely utilize, especially when I go on a Captain Morgan Chocolate Chip Cooking baking spree...

Saturday, June 28, 2008 Memories of Cooking...

I will have to say that it's been a super stressful week so tonight I decided to chill out and make something so basic for dinner - a hamburger. However, I wanted to doctor it up the way I like (arugula, spicy ketchup, a touch of ff mayo, ciabatta bread and some bleu cheese & provolone).

While I was cooking, I noticed that the wine fridge has been rather neglected of late. I can't remember the last time I opened a bottle of wine in this house (perhaps at my last dinner party - 5 months ago?!?!?!) so I grabbed a bottle of my favorite, Beaujolais, and cracked it open. I poured myself a healthy glass, put that by the stove and went back to playing on my goal of a perfect burger for dinner.

Then the memory hit me. My grandfather did the SAME thing when he would cook - except he would have a beer mug full of his favorite beer, cold and frosty.

Sometimes, its things like that which remind me - I am my grandfather's granddaughter.

My Favorite Cocktail: The Cable Car Martini...

In Las Vegas, when I went there with Meowmix a couple years ago, I fell in love - truly, madly and deeply - with a cocktail: The Cable Car Martini.

We stayed at the MGM and that is where Cable Car and I began our torrid affair. Now, as many know, I am also a Captain Morgan aficionado. So if you give me a martini where the primary ingredient is Captain Morgan, I'm a VERY happy gal.
So, if you are a lover of all things rum and out of the box, why not give it a try...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ingredients:
1½ ounce (or 2 oz.) Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
¾ ounce Orange Curacao (or 1 oz. Cointreau)
½ ounce Fresh Sweet and Sour or Fresh Lemon juice.
For the Rim:
Cinnamon
Sugar
Orange Peel for garnish
In an ice filled mixing glass, add the above ingredients, shake until well blended.
Strain into a Martini glass that has a “caramelized rim” of raw sugar and cinnamon.
Serve with a garnish of an orange spiral.
*To rim the glass, moisten the edge of the glass with a lemon wedge, dip the glass into the mixture of cinnamon sugar and let dry for 3-5 min while you mix the cocktail.
Also - you might have to add a bit more Captain Morgan to taste.
Friday, June 27, 2008 Yay or Nay: Meyer Lemon Olive Oil
I keep hearing a buzz about Meyer Lemon Oil. Normally, when it calls for something like that, I've been know to *shhhh* take a little lemon zest and juice, put it in some extra virgin olive oil and set it aside for a bit to "bloom" or whatever. Lately, I've been getting emails and I keep seeing "Meyer Lemon Olive Oil".
What say you: Yay or Nay?
Monday, June 23, 2008 Courtesy of Nikki: A Meme About Me...
Well I was tagged by the uber fabulous Nikki for a meme about me, which, technically is the first Meme over at Cooking in Stilettos.
1) LAST MOVIE U SAW IN A THEATRE? Sex & The City. I'm not a movie gal - went to way too many back in the day when I first moved to town so movies and I normally are non-mixy things. However, if it's George Clooney or S&TC related, I'm so there.
2) WHAT BOOK ARE U READING? Currently, I'm still perusing Sur La Table's Things Cooks Love, Lois Frankel's Nice Girls Don't Get Rich and, for fun, Jen Lancaster's "Such A Pretty Fat".
3) FAVOURITE BOARD GAME? Monopoly.
4) FAVOURITE MAGAZINE? Cooking Light or Bon Appétit; for Fashion - Cosmo/Glamour/Allure; for lifestyle: Orlando Magazine or Philadelphia Magazine.
5) FAVOURITE SMELLS? Apples; Fresh Coffee brewing.
6) FAVOURITE SOUNDS? Birds chirping in the morning.
7) WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD? Feeling "out of sorts" and "uninspired" - both of which have been running rampant over here.
8) WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THINK OF WHEN U WAKE? "Ugh. Do I really have to go to the 9to5 today?"
9) FAVOURITE FAST FOOD PLACE? Paneras.
10) FUTURE CHILDS NAME? Haven't got a clue but more than likely Justine Nichelle (if it's a girl) or Nicholas Justin (if it's a boy). The reason I have it plotted out is in honor of two of the people closest to me who have since passed, Justine and Nick.
11) FINISH THIS STATEMENT—’IF I HAD A LOT OF MONEY I’D... pay off debt; pay off my father's debt; buy a house and invest some - oh, and buy myself a pair of Loubous AND some gorgeous hammered copper Ruffoni pots.
12) DO U DRIVE FAST? Sadly, I do have a bit of a lead foot. I've curbed it a bit after speeding tickets back in the day and learning how much gas you blow when you speed.
13) DO U SLEEP WITH A STUFFED ANIMAL? Nope. A breathing, biting cat - yup.
14) STORMS–COOL OR SCARY? Depends on the storm. Standard storm - sure, it's okay - I just prefer to be inside and not be a drowned rat. If its a hurricane, oh that can be scary. I just try to keep calm that way I don't tip off the cat.
15) WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR? Chrysler LeBaron
16) FAVOURITE DRINK? Ice Coffee or a Cable Car Martini.
17) FINISH THIS STATEMENT-IF I HAD THE TIME I WOULD… blog more; write more; work on my own business.
18) DO YOU EAT THE STEMS ON BROCCOLI? Sometimes.
19) IF YOU COULD DYE YOUR HAIR ANY OTHER COLOUR, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR CHOICE? Dying and I are non-mixy things after the Grammy debacle of the errant skunk stripe. I haven't dyed it since I got it back into shape. I'll stick with my natural dark blonde.
20) NAME ALL THE DIFFERENT CITIES/TOWNS U HAVE LIVED IN? Agawam, Mass; Chicopee, Mass; New Britain, CT; Lawrence, MA; Derry, NH; Orlando, FL and now, currently, Altamonte Springs, FL. There might be changes in the near future.
21) FAVOURITE SPORTS TO WATCH? Hockey! Baseball and basketball in small doses.
22) ONE NICE THING ABOUT THE PERSON WHO SENT THIS TO YOU? Nikki is a fabulous food blogger who writes from the heart and you can tell that cooking is deep within the soul.
23) WHATS UNDER YOUR BED? Storage boxes and shoe boxes (c'mon - I'm the stiletto wench. I can only fit so much in the closet.)
24) WOULD U LIKE TO BE BORN AS YOURSELF AGAIN? Sure, I guess. I don't think I want to be reborn as a grasshopper or something else. I'll just be me.
25) MORNING PERSON OR NIGHT OWL? I'm more of a night owl. Too many years of working clubs and such has me still rebelling at early morning light.
26) OVER EASY OR SUNNY SIDE UP? I prefer over hard. That's just me.
27) FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX? With my friends in Philadelphia.
28) FAVOURITE PIE? Hmmm.. I'd have to say Pumpkin. Blueberry and Apple run a close second and third, respectively.
29) FAVOURITE ICE CREAM FLAVOUR? Espresso Chip or Haggan Daz Creme Brulee.
30) OF ALL THE PEOPLE U HAVE TAGGED, WHO IS THE MOST LIKELY TO RESPOND FIRST? I don't really tag but if you want to do it, feel free.
Sunday, June 22, 2008 Deal Alert: Princesa de Minaya Saffron at LaTienda...
Saffron has been described as one of the world's most expensive spices. However, when Spanish cooking is at the forefront, saffron is a must for any cook's pantry. I mean, what is a paella without saffron, right?
So, when you see REALLY good saffron at a REALLY good price, that's a score, right? And, with that comes a duty to tell your foodie friends. I've held off buying saffron, mostly due to the price and - seriously - what am I going to use it in? I don't make paella very often. However, I've noticed that other recipes use - most recently used in today's Everyday Italian's Chicken Scallopine with Saffron Cream Sauce.
La Tienda hits again with their Princesa de Minaya Saffron, D.O. La Mancha at $14.95. Yes, you read that right - fabulous saffron at a good price? Hot damn. Now this is no Costco saffron, my friends, but the real deal.
I'm really starting to like La Tienda - perhaps I'll toss in the sangria pitcher with the saffron purchase and kick up my heels.
What's a "must have" in YOUR spice pantry?
Saturday, June 21, 2008 Yay or Nay: Williams Sonoma Egg Poacher
I recently got an email that Williams Sonoma is having a sale (and that screeching you hear is my wallet screaming in frustration as Sur La Table is ALSO having a sale).
One of the things I'm debating is this 6 Cup Egg Poacher.
It's normally $59.99 and on sale for $34.99. I'm going to do some comparison shopping before I check out but that is a pretty decent deal, no?
What say you - Yay or Nay?
Friday, June 20, 2008 Beauty In A Place Setting...
If you haven't gone to Rosanna Inc. yet, you should. This site has such exquisite tableware that every time I visit, I want to immediately order something. There is a reason why she made Oprah's favorite things. My goal when I get settled in is to have some Vietri, Pillvuyt and Rosanna Inc. in my entertaining repertoire. Check out some of my favorites.
The Les Femmes Collection.
Knowing my love of all things teal and paisley, the best of both worlds is in the Darjeeling Glass collection
And their companion Darjeeling collection.
This makes me think of the Shore and summers by the sea: The Beach Cottage collection.
The Parisian Wallpaper collection just is beyond chic.
Finally, their Caffe Italia collection is divine as well.
At this rate, my table will be better dressed than my shoe closet.
Wednesday, June 11, 2008 Obsessed With: LaTienda's Sangria Pitcher...
What is YOUR favorite summertime cocktail?
For me, it has to be Sangria. Sangria seems to bring visions of tropical breezes, cool places and relaxation. It's always a hit whenever it's on the menu and is one of my favorite go-to cocktails when I throw a soiree.
LaTienda has a stunning Sangria Pitcher that I'm contemplating purchasing. It's reasonably priced and has that "wow" factor that would look fantastic on the bar. I love to make big pitchers of Sangria and my guests just keep their glasses filled throughout the night.
Effortless and elegant entertaining - can't beat that.
Monday, June 9, 2008 The Second NFNS Finalist Gets The Boot...
One of the things I look forward to every week is the commentary after this week's Next Food Network Star on FNDish from Amateur Gourmet's Adam and FN's own Sunny Anderson (joined by her bro, Drew, who seems to favor Ms. Lisa). Sunny had some great tips re: poaching eggs (something that I have YET to master) and some insight on what really should have went down. They should let Adam and Sunny judge on of the eps next season (just my opinion).
And, yes, for now, my vote is for Philly fave, Aaron (and shush - don't call me biased but yes, I think he can cook like a fiend).
Check out
their commentary below.
Monday, June 2, 2008 Recap: Next Food Network Star from FNDish...
The Amateur Gourmet's Adam Roberts and FN Star Sunny Anderson have some great commentary on last night's episode.
Check it out.
Sunny, chica - get out of my head. Last night I dubbed Lisa "Posh" and leave it to you to call out "The Neck" done Nipa Style. I will say this, I liked everyone's recaps, both on FN Dish and on the blogs, the most. And, of course, I got a kick out of the guest judges, especially
Morimoto & Giada.
What did you think of last night's episode? Did you watch?
